I hated leaving Hallie like that, but at the same time, I had to go. I had missed two texts from Viper in the middle of fucking Hallie—but there was no way I was going to stop to answer. After all, it was just a quickie and my speed back to the clubhouse made up for the few minutes that quick sex session took.

“What the hell took you so long?” Viper growled as I stepped into the conference room. “We waited on you—this is your mess.”

“I thought all messes were the club’s?” I shot back at him, unbothered by his attitude. The entire chapter wasn’t present at the table, which was a little surprising, but the look on Hannah’s face answered the why.

This isn’t gonna be good.

I took a seat next to Viper and Will, their irritation with me nearly palpable. I didn’t have an officer position—yet. But if I played my cards right I might be able to get one eventually.

“So, what’s the deal with Bethany Johnston?” I asked Hannah, ignoring everyone else. “You look like you’re full of bad news.”

She pursed her thick lips, eyeing everyone sitting at the table before meeting my eyes. “She didn’t even know who Jacob Francis was.”

My mouth started to grow dry. “And you think she was telling the truth?”

“I think she was, yeah,” Hannah said carefully, physically bracing as if someone was going to argue with her. “When I explained who he was, she just seemed really confused—like genuinely confused. I’ve interviewed enough people to know when they’re lying, and nothing about what she was putting off made me think that she wasn’t being truthful.”

“So you think that Robbie lied?” Viper’s brow furrowed. “That just isn’t the shit to lie about.”

I nodded, anger burning in my chest. “But you know…” my voice trailed off as I replayed the night with Robbie. “He gave no details—and it made it really fucking important not to tell Sergeant Johnston about it. I just always take that shit seriously.”

“Yeah, I know. We all do, but now we gotta figure out what the fuck is up with Robbie lying to us.” Viper’s voice was gritty with frustration.

“Well…” Hannah cleared her throat. “I might have done a little digging after I talked to Bethany. It didn’t take any time at all to know that she was being honest about having no idea who the guy even was, but she did say that Robbie has a lot of problems with the guys in the force—because his dad doesn’t treat him any differently. If anything, she said Robbie probably gets the shitty end of the stick.”

“So he’s got it out for his daddy’s favorite?” I took a deep breath, my mind still tempting me with the images of Hallie’s ass up in the air, her pussy dripping with arousal.

Fuck. Maybe women are a distraction.

“I don’t know,” Hannah answered me, grabbing my attention. “But I think it’s worth looking into—same as where Robbie’s apparently going to be getting the hundred grand to pay for a hit like that.
